(comparing earlier and present )   Son's age = t1 (x-1) / x-y   (comparing later and present )      Son's age = t2 (z-1) / y-z(comparing earlier and after )       Son's age = t1 (x-1) + t2 (z-1)/ x-z

where   t1 - t years earlier

t2 - t years hence

Father's age to that of son = x times (earlier/before)

Father's age to that of son = y times  ( present)

Father's age to that of son = z times   (after/hence)

PROBLEM 1
The age of a man is four times that of his son.5 yrs ago,the man was nine times as old as his son was at that time. What is the present age of the man?
SOLUTION
Son's age = t1 (x-1)/ x-y
= 5(9-1) /(9-4)  = 4x8
=32
Father's present age = 32

Trick type 3
Ratio type
                            father   :   son
Present age             Y       :    X
Aftr T yrs              a         :    b

Son's age =  Y x  ( T ( a - b ) / difference of cross product )
Father's age =  X  x  ( T ( a - b ) / difference of cross product )

                               father   :   son
Present age             Y       :    X
Before T yrs           a         :    b

Son's age =  Y x  ( T ( a - b ) / difference of cross product )
Father's age =  X  x  ( T ( a - b ) / difference of cross product )

PROBLEM 3
The ratio of ages of father and son at present is 6:1.After 5 yrs, the ratio will become 7 : 2. What is the present age of the son ?

After  5 yrs             7        :    2
Son's age =  Y x  ( T ( a - b ) / difference of cross product )
   =  1 x 5( 7 - 2 ) / (6 x 2 ) - ( 7 x 1 )
   = 30 yrs
